Choosing a thought partner is an investment

We’ll work closely together for months, so here’s what you need to know about me.

I’ve spent the last 15+ years as a professional writer and editor of amazing books.

I have spent much longer with the passion.

I was the kid who regularly carried a literal stack of books out of the library, amusing the librarians. At one point as a preteen, I mentioned to my mom that I should write one of the books I loved (I mean, why not, right?). She agreed good-naturedly and set me up on the computer with a word-processing doc.

No one was more surprised than she when, two hours later, I was most of the way through a chapter.

Ghostwriter and thought partner Alex Hughes Capell.

There’s something magical about finishing a book before anyone has the guts to tell you it’s hard.

When a 15-year-old writes a play, the high school drama department is thrilled to put it on. When the same 18-year-old says she’s going to double major in physics and creative writing to be a science fiction writer, the college makes it happen. And by the time I slammed into the cold reality of peoples’ disbelief, I’d already written two novels and started the one (Clean) that, eight drafts later, would get me published.

It was easy to put my head down and prove them wrong. That’s not to say it didn’t take a lot of hard work and a lot of learning. But I always believed that I could.

And if you work with me, I’ll bring that same attitude of cheerful inevitably to your project.

My stats

  • I recently had a client book sell at auction to Hachette, and it will come out in fall 2026 with me as a named ghostwriter on the cover

  • 20+ book-length projects as a ghostwriter or co-author

  • 20+ books edited

  • Authored five fiction books published by Penguin (under Alex Hughes)

  • My first novel, Clean, was a finalist in the Silver Falchion Award 2013, and was optioned by Twentieth Century Fox twice

  • A graduate of the prestigious Odyssey Writing Workshop

  • A semi-finalist in the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards

  • A member of the International Thriller Writers

  • Voracious lifelong learner who once had a two-hour conversation with a conveyor-belt salesman for fun (If you want to geek out, ask me about that, quantum biology, or The Quants)

Complex topics don’t scare me

I have gone deep enough in enough fields that I can hold a real intellectual conversation with you, push back when something is wrong, and recognize when an idea is genuinely groundbreaking vs. when it is dressed-up conventional wisdom.

Neurodivergent? Great!

I am neurodivergent myself. I understand the creative blocks, the imposter syndrome, the scattered brilliance. Whether you have ADHD, autism, anxiety or not, I have the skillset to help ALL of my clients through these obstacles.

Great work takes time

Here’s what I look for in my partnerships:

  • Someone willing to do the hard thinking

  • Someone willing to show up to our weekly meetings to get it right

  • Someone who wants to create something groundbreaking

“I couldn’t have a better writing partner for my upcoming ‘Overcoming the Wall of Awful’ book. I’ve been banging my head on the ‘Climbing the Wall’ chapter for weeks. Mainly because I’m too close to it/have too many ideas. At the end of our call about the chapter, Alex found the key to unlock it! Ironically, I had that same key the whole time, and didn’t even realize it was a key! As soon as we started talking about it, though, Alex saw it for what it was. She is AMAZING!!!!”
